What Is Lumigan 3ml Eye Drop?

Lumigan 3ml Eye Drop is a prescription-strength ophthalmic solution containing Bimatoprost 0.03%, a prostaglandin analog manufactured by Allergan (AbbVie). It is one of the most prescribed first-line treatments for lowering elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension worldwide. Elevated IOP is the primary risk factor for optic nerve damage and permanent vision loss in glaucoma patients. Lumigan works to protect your sight by improving the natural drainage of fluid from the eye. Browse the complete range of eye care products at Ed Care Store for more ophthalmic treatments.

What Is Lumigan Used For?

Open-Angle Glaucoma

Lumigan is a first-choice treatment for open-angle glaucoma — the most common type — where insufficient drainage of aqueous fluid causes IOP to rise progressively, threatening the optic nerve. Clinical evidence shows it reduces IOP by up to 7.5 mmHg with consistent daily use.

Ocular Hypertension

Lumigan is also prescribed to lower elevated eye pressure in patients with ocular hypertension — a key risk factor for glaucoma — even before optic nerve damage develops. For a broader selection of ophthalmic eye drops, explore our full collection.

How Does Lumigan Work?

Lumigan mimics naturally occurring prostaglandins in the eye to increase the outflow of aqueous humor — the fluid that maintains eye pressure — through two drainage routes: the trabecular meshwork (main pathway) and the uveoscleral route (secondary pathway). By improving drainage through both simultaneously, it lowers IOP more effectively than treatments targeting only one pathway. Unlike beta-blocker glaucoma drops that reduce fluid production, Lumigan actively increases drainage. IOP reduction begins around 4 hours after the first dose. For patients requiring advanced ophthalmic therapies, our eye injections range offers additional specialist options.

How to Use Lumigan Eye Drops

  1. Wash hands thoroughly before handling the bottle.
  2. Remove contact lenses — wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting.
  3. Tilt head back, pull down the lower eyelid to form a small pocket.
  4. Squeeze one drop into the pocket without touching the dropper tip to your eye or any surface.
  5. Close the eye gently and press the inner corner for 1 to 2 minutes to aid absorption.
  6. Replace the cap immediately after use.
If using more than one eye drop medication, wait at least 5 minutes between each. Use Lumigan once daily in the evening only — applying it more frequently reduces its IOP-lowering effect.

Lumigan Dosage

Adults (16 Years and Older)

One drop in the affected eye(s) once every evening. Do not exceed one dose per day. If you miss a dose, skip it and resume the following evening — do not double up.

Under 16 Years

Lumigan is not recommended for patients under 16. For general eye health support, explore our eye gel products and eye care capsules — both suitable for complementary ocular health management.

Side Effects of Lumigan Eye Drops

  • Eye redness (conjunctival hyperemia) — the most common effect, affecting around 1 in 3 patients. Typically mild and diminishes within the first month.
  • Eyelash changes — increased length, thickness, and darkening. Usually reversible after stopping treatment.
  • Iris pigmentation — gradual darkening of iris colour, potentially permanent. Most noticeable when treating only one eye.
  • Periorbital skin darkening — usually reversible upon discontinuation.
  • Eye itching, dryness, or mild irritation.
  • Temporary blurred vision after application — avoid driving until vision clears.
Stop use and seek urgent medical attention if you experience sudden vision changes, signs of severe eye inflammation, or symptoms of allergic reaction such as facial swelling or difficulty breathing.

Precautions & Who Should Avoid Lumigan

  • Do not use if allergic to bimatoprost or any ingredient in the formulation.
  • Remove soft contact lenses before use — the preservative (benzalkonium chloride) can discolour lenses. Reinsert after 15 minutes.
  • Use with caution if you have a history of eye inflammation (uveitis or iritis).
  • Inform your doctor of any recent eye surgery, injury, or infection before continuing use.
  • Pregnancy Category C — only use when clearly necessary under medical supervision.
Regular check-ups with your ophthalmologist are essential to monitor IOP levels and watch for any changes in eye appearance. For health guidance and medication tips, visit the Ed Care Store Blog. Yes, it can. Long-term use may gradually increase brown pigmentation in the iris, and this change can be permanent — even after stopping treatment. If treating only one eye, a colour difference between eyes may develop. Discuss this risk with your ophthalmologist before starting.
Yes. Lumigan is compatible with other IOP-lowering eye drops. Always wait at least 5 minutes between applications to prevent one drop from washing out the other. Your doctor will advise on the best combination for your pressure targets.
Store between 2°C and 25°C, away from direct light and moisture. Keep tightly capped and out of reach of children. Do not freeze. Discard after the expiry date. Never share your bottle with others, even if they have the same condition. For further eye care support, explore our eye care supplement capsules for complementary long-term eye health.
